April UPDATE

Hello Everyone,  Sorry it’s been so long since the last post.  Things have been real busy around here and I’m working full time and then some.

Matt’s been doing great with things.  He’s eating lots of different things.  Different flavors, textures.  Eggs and cupcakes are way back now.  Tuna salad, pineapple, squash, crackers, cookies, beans, cake, potatoes, melon lately.   Lisa and Tiffany have been slowly increasing the variety and especially texture and he does well with it all.  There are things he doesn’t like and he will refuse to go beyond the first bite, so Lisa just moves on to the next thing.  She encourages him to finish a whole avocado or acorn squash with butter and a little honey of coarse, and tells him he can have some desert if he finishes.  That usually does the trick if he’s hungry enough.  He’s going through a small meal in about 20 - 30 minutes.  Physically he’s gotten alot stronger and smoother with his legs.  He definitely has the strength and muscle coordination to hold himself up standing as well as hold his head up on his own while doing it.  We just bought Matt a Total Gym so we can focus on smooth muscle movement squatting up and down and holding each motion until he is asked to either push himself up or squat down.  He does remarkably well for Lisa and I.  He is also pedaling on his bike now all on his own non stop for up to 200 revolutions without any help.  That’s because of the work Lisa, Joan, Elizabeth and Ellen do at the house as well as the work at Kinematics on the Giger and LokoMat machines twice a week.  Matt is still seen by Spencer and we are slowly trying tp bring more and more of Jon Kern into the picture.  Jon is a big guy and has a very dynamic and physical approach.  When Jon is finished, both Jon and Matt are exhausted and sweating.  Matt sleeps real good on those days.

This Tuesday the 19th of April Matt is going in for a follow up EEG.  It’s been a couple of years and the last one was at Kaiser.  At that time Matt was given the Kaiser 20 minute EEG.  This one is through Scripps with Dr. Michael Lobatz directing.  It will me a 90 minute study with a follow up evaluation.  Dr. Lobatz has recently seen Matt along with a colleague.  They reviewed a evaluation from another doctor and have now become real interested with Matt since seeing him.

I personally feel, along with everyone else who aggresively works with and pushes Matt, that he’s moving along quite smoothly.  I really think that I will get him standing up all on his own.  He really listens to what is asked of him and works very hard at performing the task.  He also has alot of instinctual movements and reactions.  Everyone sees that Matt is very aware of his surroundings, who’s there, what he’s doing, where he’s going and what he needs to do to help.  They all commenton what a pleasure Matt is to work with because of all his help and patience.

He’s still lovable Matt.  That hasn’t changed.

I’ll post the finding from the EEG study when we know.

I am so happy to hear about Matt’s progress. Each time, he is showing improvement. So glad he is eating and using those muscles that involve swallowing and oral motor skills. You and Lisa are doing an amazing job of working with Matt and encouraging him. Thank you for keeping us updated on Matt.
